0 Deafsumer: Netflix streaming video (Part Two)
I continue to give Netflix a shot. I’m less than impressed, and will probably cancel; I’m totally behind NAD and their current suit against the Big Red Sign. Here’s why.

So I just subscribed to Netflix again, after years of turning my head every time I passed a red package on the street. It’s not just the iPad app that convinced me, though. See, I believe in financial activism. When Netflix ignored Deaf customers and their calls for online access-when their top officer made discriminating, disparaging remarks about us-I cut them off. I loved Netflix DVDs and the luxury of [...]
Netflix has added captioning support, finally, to the iPhone, iPad, and the iPod Touch. Read this MacNN article for more details and directions on how to use the feature. Comment below and let us know how you like the feature, and if it works for you!
Thu Dec 02, 2010 at 12:14:12 PM PST I was reluctant to sign the Dailykos petition in support of Netflix and asking the FCC to reign in Comcast’s abuse of corporate power. Why was I reluctant to do so? Because of the history of Netflix’s hostile business practices towards the deaf community, in refusing to caption streaming videos. Dana Mulvany, a consumer advocate, explains the history between Netflix and the [...]
One of the biggest bills for the deaf community was signed into law by President Obama today. It’s called the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010. What does this law do? For starters, it makes the Internet accessible to the deaf community by requiring television programming to be captioned on the Internet, a closed-caption button on television remotes, and hearing aid compatibility for smartphones. This is a [...]
Unless you’ve been under a rock this week, you’ve probably seen this week’s troubling stories about gay teens committing suicide. The deaths of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown from a small town just outside Houston, Texas, and Seth Walsh in Tehachapi, California have haunted my thoughts this week. Watching Seth Walsh’s sister’s Youtube clip made before her brother died -while she still had hope that he would live- [...]
It’s been a long slog, but our usual deaf barriers for watching internet video are crumbling. Hulu.com today added a filter to its search engine to return only closed-captioned videos. I’ve been catching up on new episodes of The Simpsons for weeks now, and their captioning is wonderful. If you have not been using Hulu, you are missing out, my friend. There are dozens of television series up there ready for [...]
A few days ago, YouTube added captioning/subtitle support to its videos. Users can upload their own SubViewer (.sub) or SubRip (.srt) files to videos. Viewers can turn on captioning (if enabled) by clicking on the bottom-right button on the player. Right now, however, YouTube doesn’t seem to offer a feature to search for captioned videos only. Got a favorite YouTube video you’ve been itching to watch with captions? According to TechCrunch, [...]
Reddit.com is one of my favorite sites. If you haven’t check it out yet, do so. So, I was looking at it today and found this story: Here are the photos of the CNN Closed Captioning. It’s not every day that closed captioning is a story on Reddit’s front page, so off I clicked, and found these images. Apparently, the captionist accidentally typed “Al Qaeda” when it should read “Hillary [...]
I went to MacWorld last week! As a Mac user and a newly-minted resident of San Francisco, it was my holy and solemn duty to go. I made especially sure to go the day after Steve Jobs’ keynote so I could see new Apple machines on display. While my hopes for a MacBook Pro update was dashed, I was intrigued by the updated Apple TV and the MacBook Air. First, [...]
